VIPER Day
Every spring, VIPER brings its full community together for VIPER Day — an annual tradition celebrating graduating seniors, welcoming back alumni, and connecting current students with the broader VIPER network. The day is co-hosted by the VIPER program, the VIPER Student Board (VSB), and the VIPER Alumni Board (VAB), and draws 15–20 alumni back to Penn each year for a full slate of programming that brings many cohorts of the VIPER community together in one place.
Why It Matters
VIPERs now find themselves as leaders across research institutions, industries, and organizations working on the world's grand energy challenges. VIPER Day is a chance for current students to connect with that network — and for alumni to stay connected to the program and to each other. From first-year students to seasoned alumni, the connections formed on VIPER Day continue to shape the future of energy and the people leading it.
The Senior Showcase
One of the highlights is the Senior Showcase, one of the program's longest-standing traditions. Graduating seniors take the stage to share reflections on their VIPER journeys — looking back on how they have grown over the years and what they have learned from their experiences. Each presentation offers a deeply personal look into the dual-degree experience, and the stories tend to spark both laughter and quiet reflection among the audience. The session closes with the presentation of senior awards recognizing exceptional contributions and achievements.
"One reassurance I found in conversations with alumni was that many of them haven't 'figured it out' either — and that the feeling of not knowing what you're doing is something college graduates have too."
— Lorenzo (Class of 2026)
The Alumni Panel
In the afternoon, alumni share how their VIPER experience shaped their paths after Penn. Past panelists have gone on to careers spanning energy policy, PhD research, industry experience, and more — illustrating the vast range of directions a VIPER degree can take you. The diversity of careers students are exposed to is one of the highlights of this event. For current students, the panel is a valuable opportunity to ask candid questions and hear from people who were recently in the same position.
"I was truly inspired by our alumni who are living the promise of creating sustainable energy solutions and still actively upholding the values instilled by VIPER even after graduation."
— Nhlanhla (Class of 2026)
Community and Connection
Beyond the formal programming, VIPER Day is a chance to simply be in community. Students and alumni gather in the VIPER Lounge, share meals together, and take part in lighthearted friendly competitions.
The day also has a way of making the VIPER identity tangible. The lounge walls tell the story of the program—framed newspaper clippings, years of VIPER stoles customized by each graduating class, whiteboards filled with scribbles from study sessions and Student Board events. For returning alumni, it's a chance to see how far the program has come. For current students, it's a reminder that they're part of something that extends well beyond their four years at Penn.
